How do you find a reliable mechanic when you move to a new area?

I recently relocated and ran into a problem I didn’t expect finding a mechanic I can actually trust. Back home, I had a go-to guy who knew my car inside out, but starting fresh feels like a gamble.

So far, I’ve been trying a few things: checking Google reviews (but not relying on just 5-star ratings), asking local car groups, and even observing how busy a workshop is. I also pay attention to how clearly they explain issues if they’re vague or pushy, that’s usually a red flag.

One thing that helped me a bit was reading through some guides online about common issues, especially since I drive a Japanese import. I came across a helpful breakdown on a site focused on Japanese imported cars in Pakistan, which gave me a better idea of what to expect and what questions to ask mechanics.

Still, I feel like word-of-mouth is king in this space.

How do you guys vet a new mechanic? Any specific signs you look for (good or bad)? Would love to hear your experiences.
